Finding Utopia

I discovered last week that I'd lost Utopia.

I was working on a project (hopefully a future blog post), and couldn't find Thomas More anywhere. I even recruited Rhyme in the hunt, but it was futile.

At that point I realized it was time to arrange our books. When we moved in, they all got unpacked (thanks Emily), but we'd never gotten around to arranging them. This became my afternoon project.

Where would I find my Utopia? Would it be hiding behind Ayn Rand? Under Kant? By Plato? Or would it be squashed by Aquinas, Lewis, Augustine, or Chesterton? Like many of the philosophers who have made it to my shelf, I hunted for Utopia...

Utopia was eventually found with a different cover than I remembered (ironic). We had sold the edition I was looking for (even more ironic).

The shelves are arranged, with some gleeful moments. Mikethwait & Wooldridge are next to de Tocqueville (both European commentators trying to understand American politics), C.S. Lewis has been (almost) contained to one shelf, and - what makes me most happy - Ayn Rand is looking somewhat uncomfortable sitting between Keynes and Nietzche. All that's left is to try to fit the literature books onto the remaining bookcase.

Pairing books side-by-side on one's shelves can be awfully fun. :-)

I have a copy of Utopia; I even know roughly where on my shelf it is. Guess I should read it, huh?
